Akira Zakamoto composes astonished, silent snapshots in which the protagonists are children watching what grown-ups have done: they play at war, they revel in massacre. So, between photographic reality, Japanese manga and everyday horror, he stages acts of war that will scar an innocent childhood, forced against its will to witness, as a helpless spectator, what unfolds. Games give way to rubble, wonder and laughter to horror; shut inside papered-over boxes, without colour and without light, the children look at us and silently ask the reason for so much violence.
